AUSTIN, TX — Today, Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Commissioner Dr. John Hellerstedt, hosted a Zika virus prevention roundtable in Brownsville that allowed local leaders and health officials to discuss prevention efforts as Texas prepares to enter peak mosquito season.
Participants in the roundtable included Mayor of Harlingen, Chris Boswell, Mayor of San Benito, Celeste Sanchez, Mayor of Rio Hondo, Gustavo Olivares, Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr., Cameron County Health Administrator, Esmeralda Guajardo, Brownsville Health Director, Arturo Rodriguez, UTRGV President, Dr. Guy Bailey, Brownsville ISD Superintendent, Dr. Esperanza Zendejas, and Harlingen CISD Superintendent, Dr. Art Cavazos, among others.
“I commend Governor Abbott for taking action to address the threat of the Zika virus,” said Representative Lucio. “This is an important and ongoing public health matter, and we must do everything in our power to combat and prevent impact on the future generations of Texans.”
